Route: Alchenflüh – Heidmoos – Oberhard

The A1 highway is the most important west-east axis for car traffic. It connects the cities of Geneva and St. Gallen and while doing so traverses nine cantons. The two cities of Bern and Zurich also lie along this route, and are only 56 minutes apart from each other with public transportation since the opening of the high-speed route in 2004. This newly constructed route was part of the Swiss railway project «Bahn 2000» of the SBB (Schweizerische Bundesbahnen, Swiss Federal Railways).

At Lyssach, where among others the Swiss dairy group Emmi AG has a production site, the railway network was roofed artificially to protect the food producer from micro bacterial emissions.
