Route: Sämtisersee – Alp Soll – Hoher Kasten
The Sämtisersee, like the Fählensee and the Seealpsee, is a lake in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden in the Alpstein Massif at the foot of the Hohe Kasten (1,795 m above sea level). It lies at an altitude of approximately 1,209 m above sea level and drains below ground. Its water surfaces again in the Rhine Valley. In hot dry summers, the lake dries up almost completely.
The Hohe Kasten (1,795 m above sea level) lies at the border between the cantons of St. Gallen and Appenzell Innerrhoden and is part of the Alpstein Massif. Situated above the St. Gallen Rhine Valley, it forms the entrance to the Swiss Alps and boasts a striking panorama . The striking summit has been accessible via aerial cableway from Brülisau since 1964.
