Route: Wildstrubel Glacier – Wildstrubel – Glacier de la Plaine Morte
The Glacier de la Plaine Morte is a plateau glacier located at a high plateau in the Bernese Alps between Lenk in the north and Sierre in the south. It extends 5 km from west to east and covers an area of roughly 9 km². The Plaine Morte Glacier is flanked by the Wildstrubel (3,244 m above sea level), the Schneehorn (3,178 m above sea level), the Grat der Faverges (2,968 m above sea level), the Tothorn (2,935 m above sea level), the Pointe de la Plaine Morte (2,927 m above sea level), the Weisshorn (2,948 m above sea level), and the Gletscherhorn (2,943 m above sea level). The glacier inclines slightly towards the north and ends in the narrow tongue of the Rezli Glacier at currently 2,480 m.
The creek Trübbach rises here. It cascades down the steep precipice in several waterfalls to the Rezlialp and there joins the spring water of the Siebenbrunnen to form the river Simme. Another freshet runs southeast of the glacier via the Tièche towards the Rhone. Thus, water from the Plaine Morte Glacier flows into the North Sea as well as the Mediterranean Sea.
A funitel runs from the holiday destination of Crans-Montana in the canton of Valais to the Pointe de la Plaine Morte, which makes the glacier area accessible (summer skiing, cross-country skiing).
