Route: Sihlsee – Höhronen – Etzel – Lake Zurich
The Sihlsee is a reservoir in the high valley of Einsiedeln. The river Sihl runs through it and it is dammed by a 33-m-high and 124-m-long dam wall. The Sihlsee is the largest reservoir in Switzerland in terms of surface area (10.72 km²). In 1936, the dam wall was built and the following year the valley was flooded.
The Etzel (1,098 m above sea level) lies between Lake Zurich and the Sihlsee in the canton of Schwyz. It is considered to be the local mountain of Pfäffikon and is a popular leisure destination. Below the summit is the top of the Etzel Pass with the St. Meinrad chapel. Because of the Etzel, the river Sihl does not run directly into Lake Zurich, but alongside the Höhronen towards Sihlbrugg and into the Sihltal valley.
