Route: Airolo
Airolo (1,141 m above sea level) is a village and a municipality in the canton of Ticino (district of Leventina). North of Bellinzona, it is situated at the southern foot of the Passo del San Gottardo (Gotthard Pass; 2,106 m above sea level) and at the entrance to the Val Bedretto valley, which leads across the Nufenen Pass (2,478 m above sea level) into the canton of Valais. There is a hiking trail across the San Giacomo Pass into the Italian valley Val Formazza. The municipality also includes the villages of Brugnasco, Fontana, Madrano, Nante, and Valle.
Airolo is the gate to the south. Here, rail tunnels (opened in 1882) and road tunnels (opened in 1980) run to the Valle Leventina to Biasca.
