Lausanne (370 – 870 m above sea level) is Switzerland's fourth-largest city and is located on the shores of Lac Léman (Lake Geneva), surrounded by vineyards. On the opposite shore, the Savoy Alps rise above Lake Geneva. The headquarters of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) are located in Lausanne, making the capital of the canton of Vaud the «Olympic Capital».
The harbor quarter, Ouchy, with its parks and palace hotels, is connected to the city center via the only metro in Switzerland. The cathedral in the old town is a sight known all across Europe. It was built as a Gothic basilica and is dedicated to Notre Dame («Our Lady», Mary). All around the cathedral, shopping streets invite people to shop and linger.
